BLOCKS: Chart Block

Chart Block

The Chart Block lets you create a visual representation of data in charts and graphs directly on a Dashboard, Portal Page, Public Page, LMS or Proposal. Data values can be entered manually or pulled dynamically from Number Type Custom Fields, making the Chart Block a powerful tool for displaying live or static data in a visually engaging format.

What This Block Is Used For

Use this block whenever you want to present numerical data in a visual format that is easy for users to understand at a glance. It works well for both internal reporting and Client-facing dashboards.

  • Display sales figures, revenue breakdowns, or performance metrics in an easy-to-read chart
  • Show a Client a visual summary of their project, usage, or account data
  • Pull live data from Number Type Custom Fields so charts update automatically as data changes
  • Present multiple data points together in a single visual for quick comparison

How to Add This Block

1. Open the Content Block Editor on the page or portal you wish to edit.

2. Click the Add Block (+) button to open the block selection menu.

3. Select Chart from the list.

Once added, the block will appear in your layout for you to add your settings.  Alternatively, you can click the pencil (edit) icon in the block toolbar to open the block options.

How to Configure the Block

The Chart Options modal will appear with three tabs: Block Options, Style Options, and Access Options.

Title: Optionally enter a title to be displayed above the chart. Leave this blank if you do not want a title shown.

Chart Type: Use the dropdown to choose how your data will be displayed. Several chart types are available, allowing you to select the format that best suits your data and your audience. Chart Types include Pie Chart, Horizontal Bar Chart, Bar Chart, Doughnut Chart, Polar Area Chart.

Values: Add and manage the data points that will appear in your chart. Click the Add New Value button to create a new data point. For each value you can configure the following:

  • Label — The name of the data point as it will appear in the chart legend.
  • Source Type — Choose between entering a manual number value or pulling data automatically from a Number Type Custom Field.
  • Value — Enter the numerical value manually, or select the Custom Field to pull the data from.
  • Color — Choose a colour for this data point in the chart.

You can reorder, edit, duplicate, or delete values at any time using the icons displayed alongside each value.

Width and Height: Enter size values in pixels or as a percentage to control how large the chart appears on the page. Leave these fields empty to use the default size.

Alignment: Align the chart to the centre, left, or right of the block.

TIP: Using the Number Type Custom Field source type means your chart values will update automatically whenever the Custom Field data changes, without you needing to edit the block manually. This is ideal for dashboards that display live or frequently updated data.

What Users Will See

Visitors on the page will see a rendered chart displaying your configured data in the chart type you have selected.

  • An animated chart displayed at the size and alignment you have set
  • A legend identifying each data point by its label and colour
  • A title displayed above the chart if one has been configured
  • Live data reflected in the chart if Number Type Custom Fields are being used as the data source

Best Practices

A well-configured Chart Block makes complex data easy to understand and gives your dashboards and portals a professional, polished appearance.

  • Choose a chart type that suits the nature of your data. Pie charts work well for showing proportions, while bar or line charts are better for comparisons and trends.
  • Use distinct, contrasting colours for each data point to make the chart easy to read at a glance.
  • Keep the number of data points manageable. Too many values on a single chart can make it difficult to read.
  • Use Number Type Custom Fields as the data source wherever possible so your charts stay up to date automatically.
  • Add a clear title to help users immediately understand what the chart represents without needing additional context.

TIP: The Chart Block works especially well on Client-facing dashboards where you want to give Clients a clear visual summary of their account, usage, or project data. Pair it with the Progress Bar Block to create a comprehensive and visually engaging reporting section.
